The European Biennial Network has initiated, with the support of the Culture Programme of the European Union, the Biennial Exchange and Residency Programme: a two-year cycle of workshops, residency and traineeship programmes, research visits, and networking events. These activities are designed to reflect the diversity of different approaches to contemporary art, and to create opportunities for research, exchange of ideas, and creative partnerships.

FEBRUARY 2009

Communication & Marketing in International Biennials
Working Group Meeting & Workshop | Organised by the Lyon Biennial
February 20th & 21st 2009, Lyon

The members of the European Biennial Network, as part of the Biennial Exchange and Residency Programme, are participating in a Working Group Meeting and Workshop, which will examine issues of communication and marketing in the context of international biennial exhibitions. This two-day intensive Working Group Meeting and Workshop, which is not open to the public, aims to further the knowledge that organisers of large scale contemporary art events have about connecting to their respective communities, making their message accessible to their audiences, and communicating across and increasingly international and multi-faceted contemporary art landscape. Participants in the Working Group Meeting and Workshop, who will include the members of the European Biennial Network, as well as invited speakers and contributors, will exchange information about the ways their own institutions and organisations face the most pressing communication and marketing issues of the day, within the world of contemporary art, and will attempt to trace common characteristics between great cultural diversities that stretch across the continent of Europe and all around the world. Material from Working Group Meeting and Workshop will then be used to inform the strategies of participating biennials.

Participants in the Working Group Meeting and Workshop include:

European Biennial Network Members: Athens Biennial: Augustine Zenakos (Co-Director, Project Manager Biennial Exchange and Residency Programme), and Poka –Yio (Co-Director) | Berlin Biennial: Denhart von Harling, Press and Communication Manager | Istanbul Biennial: Bige Orer (Director), and Arzu Yayintas (Marketing Director) | Liverpool Biennial: Anthony Pickthall, Head of Marketing and Communication | Lyon Biennial: Sylvie Burgat, General Manager; Genevieve Paire, Marketing and Communication Manager, and Frederique Gautier, Artistic Coordinator

Invited Speakers and Contributors: Francesco di Cesare, Marketing and Sponsorship Manager, Venice Biennial | Tehmi Sukhla, Marketing and Spomsorship Manager, Sydney Biennial | Kee Hong Low, General Manager, Singapore Biennial

The Lyon Biennial, organiser of this event on behalf of the European Biennial Network, will also support the proceedings with several members of its staff, including Justine Belot (Partnership and Sponsorship), Cecile Claude (Partnership and Sponsorship), Alexandra Chopin (Artistic Coordination), Kader Damani (Cultural Programming and Follow-up), Nicolas Garait (Professional Relationship), Barbara Loison (Communication), Elisabeth Tugaut (Visitor Services), Catherine Verbruggen (Partners Club), Anne Villa (Administration) and Jack Vos (Communication).
